The VA Leadership Development Framework is fundamentally anchored in the principles of servant leadership. This approach transcends a mere competency model, offering a set of guiding principles that inform effective leadership practices. Within the VA context, servant leadership emphasizes the importance of mission focus and personal character. Leaders are encouraged to foster self-awareness, seek constructive feedback, lead by example, and uphold their personal values, ultimately striving to serve others, particularly Veterans.
Leaders play a pivotal role in cultivating a culture of continuous learning and development. They are tasked with inspiring environments centered on service and providing ample opportunities for team members to reach their fullest potential. Additionally, a strong emphasis is placed on organizational results; leaders are expected to make timely decisions, hold themselves and others accountable, and remain committed to delivering exceptional service to Veterans. This training module primarily targets emerging leaders and team leaders who do not hold supervisory roles.
Through engaging scenarios, participants will gain insights into the core elements of servant leadership:
- Focus on the individual AND the organization: This entails maintaining a delicate balance in which both aspects are equally valued and prioritized.
- Focus on employees’ growth and development: Leaders should continually seek ways to nurture staff and celebrate their career achievements, fostering growth for the individuals rather than solely for organizational benefits.
- Demonstrate the embodiment of values: Values must not only be articulated but also visibly reflected in one’s behavior and integrated into decision-making processes.
- Investment in the success of all stakeholders: Recognizing that collective success reinforces organizational strength; prioritizing personal success may detract from broader mission objectives.
- Making time for self-reflection: Leaders should allocate time for reflecting on their daily interactions, assessing what can be improved or celebrated, and identifying any necessary corrective actions.
- Understanding the importance of demonstrating humility: Regardless of one’s position or accomplishments, remaining open to learning from others is essential.
- Understanding the art of withdrawal: Leaders should intentionally carve out time to reassess priorities and resist being overwhelmed by less critical demands on their attention. Strategic breaks for contemplation are necessary for effective evaluation and planning.
